Protect Yourself from the Sun: Outdoor Research Giveaway

The past few months I’ve spent almost every day sitting in the beautiful Florida sun watching soccer practices, games or working in the yard. While I love the sun, I do not love skin cancer. Even with the use of sunblock the kids and I are browning up and it is challenging to protect everyone from the sun when it is sunny all the time!

A few weeks ago I received two hats from Outdoor Research. I had been wearing my baseball cap to the soccer fields, but it only shielded the top part of my face. These sun hats from Outdoor Research do a great job of protecting your whole face.

The papyrus brim hat shields  your whole face from the sun. My husband quickly snatched it up and has been wearing it all the time. My kids like it too and it’s breathable so the hat doesn’t cause your head to get any hotter than it would already be in the sun.

I also received this awesome Kids’ Helios hat. I chose orange so my boys and girls could wear it and it has UPF 30 protection to keep their little heads from getting sunburned. This hat is super cute and my kids love it. It also floats so if it happens to fly off at the beach or the lake it is easy to find floating in the water. (Great idea, huh?)

My kids spend so much time outside it is nice to know their faces are being protected while they play.

What I like about these hats is that they are high quality and will last a long time. I’ve purchased cheaper hats in the past and they only lasted one summer. These hats are very durable and I imagine they will last for several summers.

I have ……… from Outdoor Research to giveaway. To enter to win leave a comment sharing what outdoor activity your family enjoys during the summer. Giveaway ends May 16, 2011. Open to readers with a US mailing address only.

Field of Vision: My Visit to a Movie Set

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit a movie set. Since my older two children spend most of their free time making movies I was very interested in learning more about it.

We were able to watch filming, interview the actors, visit the prop trailer, wardrobe, and the snack trailer. Even though I didn’t know what to expect, I was still amazed by the entire process.

Set

The day we were there, they were shooting at a closed school. The main reason Atlanta was chosen for this movie was because of the school. You can’t shoot a movie in a school that is in use, so film makers need to find schools that are no longer in use to film, or build a set. It was nice to see so many local businesses contributing to the production. From the hotel to drivers to actors this movie is bringing business to Atlanta.

Wardrobe

This was my favorite part (aside from meeting the cast). We met the woman in charge of wardrobe and she was great. I was excited to hear that even wardrobes have a budget and many of the clothes purchased for the movie were on clearance!

One interesting fact about wardrobe is that when the actor is wearing an outfit for a scene, they take a photo of the actor in the clothes and then hang it on the outfit with a few notes. This way if they are shooting days later they actor’s clothes have continuity, even down to what pockets are buttoned!

Props

The prop trailer was interesting too. There are bins and bins (all labeled) with different props. The trailer travels to different movies and supplies props for each one. There was everything from crime scene tape to crayons in the trailer.

Food

There was so much food and it was all so good. There were options for everyone including gluten free and vegetarian. I honestly don’t know how actors are thin given all the food options available!

Camera

We had our own camera man for the day since we weren’t allowed to take any photos. Since my kids are so interested in making movies I asked him a few questions about filming. His top two tips for amateur movie makers:

  • Think about the whole shot when filming. Background is important so take that into consideration.
  • Lighting is important, good lighting can make all the difference in an amateur movie.

Crew

I was amazed at how many people it takes to make a movie and how good they all are at their jobs. It was interesting to watch everyone working together to film one scene. From the person who holds the mic (my arms hurt watching him) to the lady who was always checking the make-up, everyone worked together and knew when to keep quiet and stay out of the way.

Actors

We were able to interview Tony Oller, Joe Adler, Faith Ford, Dane Davenport, and Alyssa Shafer. I was surprised at how friendly and down to earth all these actors were. Alyssa is an adorable 12 (and a half) year old who charmed us all. She talked about growing up in “the business” and her love of microbiology. (Seriously, she is 12!) She is homeschooled along with her three brothers and left us all speechless. One theme that was evident in all of their lives was a great relationship with their parents. Listening to them reminded how important it is to make our relationships with our children a priority, not an afterthought.

Miscellaneous Movie Info

They do the same thing over and over and over. We watched them tape the same scene numerous times. After a while I knew all the lines! To the untrained eye I thought they did a great job the first time, but the director was always tweaking the scene to make it better.

There is a lot of hurry up and wait. Being an extra in a film is no fun. The extras spent most of the day sitting around and waiting for the next shot. I think you need a lot of patience to be an extra.

The bathroom trailer is called the “honey trailer.” Personally I thought it needed to be called the “honey pot” but I don’t think they are going to take my suggestion.

Final thoughts

I can’t wait to see this movie. I don’t watch a lot of television or movies (my kids would say I was anti-movie) but I usually don’t watch them because many of the kid shows are boring and the adult shows are not appropriate for my kids. Procter & Gamble has teamed up with Walmart to produce a series of family friendly movies and this one is the 6th movie they have produced. What is nice about these movies is that they are enjoyable for kids and adults, have a good message, and the commercials are family friendly too.

I was able to talk with Faith Ford about her thoughts on family friendly television. Here is my interview.

It is nice to know that there are some companies who are dedicated to making family friendly films. I can only hope that other companies do the same.

Thanks to the folks at Procter & Gamble who made this trip possible for me. I had a wonderful time and can’t wait to see the finished product!

Cinderella's Castle

This blog is taking a break from its regularly scheduled content because tonight I will be sleeping here.

Yes, that is Cinderella’s castle, and yes, that is where I am sleeping tonight!!!!!

My friend Andrea won a night in the castle and she has graciously invited myself and a few other friends to join her. So tonight I will be sleeping in the Cinderella’s castle with Andrea, Amy, Crystal, Briana, and Amanda. Even though we are all adults we are giddy with excitement.

I’ll be back after the clock strikes midnight!

FB 365 Project January Check-In

How is your FB project 365 going? I did pretty well this month. I missed three days, two because I was surrounded by runny noses all day and didn’t think it would be a good picture and the other I didn’t really miss. I took a photo with my phone, and then dropped my phone in the toilet when it fell out of my pocket, and consequently my phone is no longer working. A non working phone means no photos from the phone… so that is my excuse!

I am so happy I started this project! Whenever I look at my FB 365 page it brings back great memories of every day. I can’t wait to look back after an entire year!

Here is my favorite photo from January 2011.

Next month (February) I’ll start hosting a monthly linky so you can link up with your favorite photo of the month. The only requirement, it has to be your photo.

February only has 28 days so we should be able to get a photo every day, right? 🙂

Orlando Magic Tickets for You: Bloggy Birthday

Here is something else you you might not know about me. I LOVE basketball. Being one of the tallest 6th graders (and having my dad as the coach) ensured my spot on the team, but it was my mad rebounding skills that got me the playing time. 🙂

By the 9th grade I was no longer one of the tallest kids in the class and I realized that there wasn’t much of a need for 5’6″ power forwards, so I settled for being a basketball fan instead of a player.

My favorite team, The Orlando Magic, of course! I’ve been following them off and on since the very beginning and recently my kids have started to follow them too. We all have our favorite players on the team, my daughter’s favorite being J.J. Redick, I wonder why? 😉 My current favorite is probably Ryan Anderson. Ryan gets my vote because we share the same last name and because he has improved so much this year. Well, and he plays forward… and I have always been partial to that position.

Anyway, I could go on and on about basketball, but I’ll get to the point. I have two Orlando Magic tickets to give to one reader. The winner can pick from either game:

Feb 08 TUE at home vs Los Angeles Clippers

or

FEB 23 WED at home vs Sacramento Kings

The giveaway is for the tickets only. I can’t fly you to Orlando, so only enter if you can go to one of the games or you can give the tickets to someone who can.

To enter the giveaway leave me a comment and tell me your favorite Magic player (current or past) and you’ll be entered to win the tickets.

ITunes Gift Card Giveaway: Blog Birthday Celebration

Do you know that I love music? I took piano lessons for years when I was a kid and in the process developed a love of all things musical! When I was a teenager my best friend and I dreamed of buying an old van, driving to California, and starting a band. We wrote songs, recorded them, and drove our parents nuts with our crazy dream! Well, it wasn’t actually a crazy dream for my best friend. She went on to become a singer, lol!

I’m not very picky when it comes to music, I like all kinds, as long as the musician can sing on key. I’m not a big fan of opera or heavy metal but most everything else I can tolerate. Before my phone broke, you would have found Toby Mac, Faith Hill, Indigo Girls, and Mozart in my music section.

To celebrate my bloggy birthday, I have an $15 itunes gift card to giveaway so you can buy some of your favorite music! Just leave a comment and tell me about your favorite music!

It’s My Birthday, But I’m Giving You the Gifts!

This week marks TheHappyHousewife.com’s 3rd birthday! It is hard to believe that it has been 3 years since I wrote my first post. This site has gone through a lot of changes over the past few years, but one thing has not changed. I have the best readers in the world!! I’m not exaggerating one bit, I look forward to every comment and email I receive. Over the years I have even been able to chat on the phone and meet some of you in person.  Lifelong friendships have come from this little blog!

While blogs don’t exist because of readers, they wouldn’t be very fun to write if no one was reading, so thank you for making these past three years awesome!

Even though it is my blog birthday, I think you should get the gifts! I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than to give you some of my favorite things! For the next week I’m going to be giving away my favorite things on the blog, Facebook, Twitter, and to subscribers! On Friday I have an amazing gift I want to give to one reader… but you’ll have to check back on Friday to see what favorite thing I am giving away.

What’s a birthday without cake? For me it isn’t a birthday at all since I don’t like ice cream. To get the celebration started I’m giving away one of my favorite cake ebooks!

More Cool Cakes

Not only does this e-booklet include the basics to making home decorated cakes yourself, but it also includes recipes for buttercream frostings and for doctoring up cake mixes as well as over a dozen different cake and cupcake themes that you can duplicate or use as inspiration for your own custom variations.

What I LOVE about Jessica’s cakes is that you don’t have be a professional decorator to make them! The are easy and even a novice cake maker can give their child an amazing birthday cake with her simple directions.

To start the party I’ve giving away one of these ebooks. To enter leave a comment. And don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the next gift!

FB 365 Project

I love taking pictures, but as I was going through my 2010 photos I realized I go in photo spurts. I take 200 pictures in a few days, then nothing for a few weeks. In order to stay more consistent in my photo taking, and to make sure I take photos of all my kids, not just the girls, I have started the FB 365 Project.

The FB 365 Project is so simple I hope I’ll be able to do it! Every day I’ll take at least one picture. It can be of the kids, something we made, something we find in the yard, or some place we went. I’ll use my phone or my camera and I’ll upload the photo to my Facebook page, under the photos tab.

The fun thing is that you can upload your daily photo too. The only requirement is that the photo is family friendly, no naked hiney’s or PG language.

Happy New Year!

Wow, it’s hard to believe 2010 is over!

As we begin 2011 I just wanted to thank all of you for making 2010 a wonderful year for TheHappyHousewife.com!

I can’t wait to share with you my plans for 2011! Have a safe and wonderful weekend!
