First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit Extended for Active Duty Military

Good news for military serving overseas, the First Time Homebuyer Tax Credit has been extended for an entire year.

From the IRS website:

  • Members of the military and certain other federal employees serving outside the U.S. have an extra year to buy a principal residence in the U.S. and qualify for the credit. Thus, an eligible taxpayer must buy, or enter into a binding contract to buy, a principal residence on or before April 30, 2011. If a binding contract is entered into by that date, the taxpayer has until June 30, 2011, to close on the purchase. Members of the uniformed services, members of the Foreign Service and employees of the intelligence community are eligible for this special rule. It applies to any individual (and, if married, the individual’s spouse) who serves on qualified official extended duty service outside of the United States for at least 90 days during the period beginning after Dec. 31, 2008, and ending before May 1, 2010.
  • In many cases, the credit repayment (recapture) requirement is waived for members of the uniformed services, members of the Foreign Service and employees of the intelligence community. This relief applies where a home is sold or stops being the taxpayer’s principal residence after Dec. 31, 2008, in connection with government orders received by the individual (or the individual’s spouse) for qualified official extended duty service. The credit is still allowable even if this happens during the year of purchase. Qualified official extended duty is any period of extended duty while serving at a place of duty at least 50 miles away from the taxpayer’s principal residence (whether inside or outside the U.S.) or while residing under government orders in government quarters. Extended duty is defined as any period of duty pursuant to a call or order to such duty for a period in excess of 90 days or for an indefinite period.

In other military housing news, the Homeowners Assistance Program (HAP) provides relief to families who cannot sell their homes due base closures and realignment. This looks like a great program and has recently been expanded to include assistance to wounded soldiers who are forced to transfer because of their injuries, surviving spouses of wounded warriors,  and military members who cannot sell their house because of the current mortgage crisis. This is a huge benefit, so please share this information with anyone who might be in this situation.

Simplify the Morning Routine

As a homeschooling family it isn’t often we need to be out the door early in the morning. This makes Sunday mornings quite a challenge for our family, with seven children going in seven different directions it is easy for patience to run short. Anything I can do to simplify our morning routine keeps the Happy family, happy on the way to church.

A few years ago I started doing two simple things. It started just on Sunday, but it has become our routine any time we need to leave the house early in the morning.

The night before we lay out all our clothes for the next day. From shoes to hair bows, everything is grouped together and set aside for the next morning. Clothing is approved by mom or dad and we make sure it all fits before crunch time. This saves us from mismatched socks, missing shoes, too short pants, and stained shirts the next morning.

I know many people already do this, so I am going to share with you my other secret to getting seven kids ready on time in the morning.

I let my kids sleep in their clothes.

There you go, for those of you who wonder how I do it all, that is my secret weapon. I know all my ironing readers (like my mom and mother-in-law) are cringing at this idea, but it really works! My boys wake up in the morning dressed for church. For those of you who are picturing my children in wrinkled clothes, that is not totally true. My boys usually wear knit shirts and they don’t wrinkle too much.

Getting ready the night before applies to lunches, book bags, and anything else you need to take with you the next day. For some reason getting ready the night before is always a time saver.

How about you, how do you simplify your morning routine?

Washington D.C. in the Snow

I must admit my husband is a pretty cool guy, he is always up for my ideas no matter how crazy. So when I asked if we could hop on the train to D.C. so I could get pictures of the White House in the snow, he said yes without batting an eye. Well, I exaggerate a little, he did give me that, “are you for real” look but he hopped on the train with me nonetheless.

D.C. was a mess, the mall was completely covered snow and you had to walk on top of the snow to get from one side to the other. I was surprised at how few people were there, but given the weather and the snow I can’t imagine many tourists would brave the conditions. We walked by the the Capital, the Washington Monument, and stopped at a few museums on the way, and finally made it to the White House.

It was just as pretty as I had imagined and it was fun to take pictures even if we had to stand outside the fence. 🙂

Blizzard 2010

Welcome to the Blizzard of 2010, or the REAL eat from the pantry challenge. With terrible roads and three feet of snow, we are stuck in our house for the next few days. It is still snowing as I type this post, but I am hopeful it will stop tonight. Thank goodness we have power, unlike many other families, and food in our pantry as the grocery store shelves are bare! I am getting a little creative with meals and hope to share some of my blizzard food later this week.

As promised here are a few snow pictures. I didn’t actually go outside to take them because I didn’t want my lens to get ruined, so I stood in the doorway and shot a few from out the window. Sorry they aren’t the best quality. I am sure the snow will be here a few more days so I can post some more shots soon!

Someone bring me a shovel and some sunshine….

Black Bean Baby

Those of you who frequent my BlogFrog community know that we have had a terrible time getting Cora to eat ANYTHING! We have tried homemade baby food, store bought baby food, mushed fruits and veggies, unmushed fruits and veggies, waffles, pancakes, muffins, rice, couscous, just about anything that we eat, we have tried to get her to eat.

Her typical routine goes something like this:

Look eagerly at the food. Attempt to grasp food and shove it in her mouth. Chew on food for several seconds and smile. As soon as the entire family is ready to explode in shouts of joy she spits food back out onto her tray.

This has gone on for a few months. We continue to try new things, old things, basically anything and she just won’t swallow food.

Until this week. When she ate an entire plate of this:

Seriously Cora?
