Win a Year’s Worth of Mortgage Payments – and Help a Friend!

The following is a guest post from my good friend Lauren. While I would not normally use this blog to ask you to go vote for someone you don’t know ( I save that for my Facebook friends) I am making a special exception for Lauren.

  1. because I really, really like her
  2. because I *think* she might share her chocolate chip cookie recipe with the world if she wins
  3. because by voting you can win too

It takes less than a minute to register and vote, and by registering you are automatically entered to win your mortgage/ rent paid for, for an entire year!!! I’ll let her explain the rest…

What would you do if you won a year’s worth of mortgage payments?

I can think of plenty of answers to that question – some noble, some not so noble. Roll a giant debt snowball down the hill, Dave Ramsey-style. Enjoy weekly sushi dates with my husband. Give. Save. Get pedicures at a spa where people drink Evian and wear cucumbers on their eyelids. Replace the kitchen chairs that are currently held together with a product called Monkey Glue. Take a trip.

These were the thoughts that propelled me down the sidewalk with my video camera, looking like a regular Francis Ford Coppola with a baby on my hip as I shouted, “Good! Good! Now one more time around the block!” Only it wasn’t Al Pacino I was directing; it was my four-year-old son, Noah, and we were filming our entry for Taylor Morrison’s “Homemade Memories” video contest. The challenge was to create a short video about our most treasured memories of home, and the prize – $18,000 – was enough to make me suspend all normal household operations (laundry, cooking, showering, reading Happy Housewife) in order to capture my family on film. With a hope and a prayer, I submitted my entry into the contest.

And now – I AM ONE OF TEN FINALISTS COMPETING FOR THE BIG PRIZE.

Just the thought of it makes me need to sit down and put my head between my knees. The winner will be determined by vote – an agonizing process requiring me to bite my fingernails to the quick and ask everyone I’ve ever met (and their spouses, parents, friends, uncles, and second cousins twice removed) to PLEASE VOTE FOR THE WEEK 2 VIDEO: “Memories Made from Scratch.” At this rate, I am going to need to add manicures to my list of post-contest indulgences.

What’s in it for you, apart from the knowledge that you are helping keep a friend from hyperventilating? Every person who votes will be entered into a drawing to receive an identical prize: your mortgage or rent paid for one year. Which, my fellow Frugalistas, is a fabulous prize. If your debt snowball needs padding, this will turn Frosty the Debt Snowman into the Abominable Debt Snowman. Or, even better – the Abominable Frosty Debt Ninja Assassin. I think I might suggest that to Dave Ramsey for his next book.

Each voter must be age 21 or over and can vote one time. Click here and vote for “Week 2: Memories Made from Scratch” (the second from the left).

Thanks, friends! I hope to see you in the Winner’s Circle!

We have a sick little one around here, I’ll be back tomorrow….

Humble Musings

I’ve been reading Amy’s blog since I started reading blogs, she is smart, funny, and a former Floridian. Her site is worth reading for the sidebar links alone.

Seeds Family Worship: The Music that Saved My Road Trip

Last month I embarked on a ten state road trip with my seven kids. Most of the trip I was the only adult in the car. 🙂 To say my children did well would be an understatement, they did awesome… except for the three hour span between Pensacola and Tallahassee, Florida. Cora decided at some point after Pensacola that she was finished with the road trip, the problem was our hotel was in Tallahassee. She proceeded to scream, and scream some more, and scream some more.

We tried everything, toys, dvd’s, funny faces, ignoring her, and nothing worked, until I slipped a Seed’s Family Worship CD into the car stereo. Within a few minutes she calmed down and fell asleep, until we reached Tallahassee. Now, as most moms know, if something is working – don’t change it! So we listened to this CD for about two hours. Now, at the end of the two hours we were all a little tired of the CD, but the cool thing about this music is that it is all Bible verses, set to music. The only words in each song are scripture, so while your kids sing along they are actually learning Bible verses.

By the time we reached Tallahassee I had learned several new verses and my kids did too. The nice thing about these CD’s that the music isn’t annoying. Adults do a lot of the singing, the music is upbeat, and the tunes are catchy. All of my children have ipods or radios in their rooms and I love that I can give them these CD’s and know that they are listening to good music with a great message.

I have always thought putting scripture to music was a great way to help your kids (and yourself) memorize Bible verses, and these CD’s are great for the whole family. I plan on incorporating them into our homeschool Bible lessons this year too.

You can listen to a few of the songs on their website.

The folks at Seeds Family Worship have given me a set of their CD’s to giveaway to one of my readers. This is such a great giveaway, I am really excited to be hosting it! To enter to win Seeds of Courage, Seeds of Faith, Seeds of Praise, and Seeds of Purpose leave a comment. Giveaway ends Monday, August 16th.

BornFree Wants to Help You Celebrate!

Have you seen the new BornFree Twist and Pop Straw cup? Not only are these cups cute, they are spill proof and like everything BornFree makes they are BPA free.

Jill had a great idea to use these sippy cups as party favors for her son’s second birthday. You can check out her cute table set up using the cups on her website.

Since the Twist and Pop cups are a new product you might not be able to find them in your local store, but they are available on the BornFree website. I am really excited to try these with Cora, as she has had so many feeding issues. She prefers a straw to a sippy, but our current cups make a huge mess!

These cups would make a great birthday gift for the one year old in your family! BornFree wants to help you celebrate by giving away 5 Twist N’Pop Cups and 5 Trainer Cups to one of my readers. WOO HOO! I know how much you all love BornFree so I am excited to host this giveaway.

To be entered to win these 10 cups from BornFree leave me a comment. Giveaway ends Wednesday August 4, 2010.
